Lash guide

How long does a lash lift last?

The short answer

A lash lift usually lasts four to six weeks, and up to around eight with a slow lash cycle and good aftercare. It does not wear off so much as grow out, softening gradually as your lashes shed and are replaced.

A lash lift is one of those treatments people book once and then rebook forever, because it makes such an easy difference to how awake your eyes look. The most common question before that first appointment is a fair one: how long is this actually going to last? Here is the honest answer, why it fades the way it does, and how to get every last day out of yours.

What is a lash lift?

A lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls your own natural lashes from the root, so they look longer and more open without any false lashes added. As dermatologist Dr Nicole Bajic explains, “basically it’s like a perm, but instead of it being applied to your hair, the solution is applied to your lashes to give them a curled effect” (Cleveland Clinic). A gentle lotion softens the lash so it can be reshaped over a small silicone shield, then a setting solution locks in the new curl.

It is often paired with a tint, a semi-permanent dye that darkens your lashes so they read as if you are wearing mascara. The whole thing takes around 45 minutes, and unlike lash extensions there is nothing glued on and no infills to keep up (Healthline).

A lash lift works with the lashes you already have. It lifts and darkens your own, rather than sticking new ones on top.

Why does a lash lift last four to eight weeks?

Independent health sources put a lash lift at around four to six weeks, because that is roughly how often your natural lashes shed and regrow (Healthline). Many UK salons quote a slightly longer six to eight weeks, which plenty of people do get with a slow lash cycle and careful aftercare. So the honest answer is a range: expect four to six weeks as standard, and treat eight as the happy top end rather than the norm.

The reason it fades rather than falls is your natural lash growth cycle. A lash lift only reshapes the lashes you have on the day, and each lash grows, rests and sheds on its own timetable. As dermatology-led guidance explains, the treatment is semi-permanent and simply grows out as new lashes replace the lifted ones (Cleveland Clinic). That is also the good news: there is no harsh kink to grow out, and your lashes return to normal on their own.

What makes a lash lift last longer, or fade faster?

Two people can have the same lift and get different mileage from it, and it usually comes down to lashes and aftercare. Picture a typical month: the curl looks its strongest in the first week or two, holds beautifully through weeks three and four, then eases off as your newer lashes come through. Good aftercare is what stretches that timeline toward the longer end rather than the shorter.

The single biggest enemy of a lash lift is oil. Oil-based cleansers, rich eye creams and heavy make-up removers all break down the set curl faster, so keeping them away from your lash line makes a real difference (Healthline). Rubbing your eyes, sleeping face-down into the pillow and lots of steam or swimming will all shorten it too.

One more thing worth being honest about: more is not better. Repeatedly perming the same lashes can overprocess and weaken them over time, in the same way that constant colouring stresses the hair on your head (Cleveland Clinic). That is exactly why the usual advice is to wait until the curl has genuinely grown out, rather than topping it up early. In practice that means rebooking roughly every six weeks, not every few.

What not to do after a lash lift

The first 24 to 48 hours do most of the work. Keep your lashes completely dry and makeup-free, and skip steam rooms, saunas, hot showers and swimming, so the curl can fully set (Healthline). After that, the ongoing rules are simple:

  • Mascara is fine, with two caveats: wait the first day or two, then use a water-based, oil-free formula. Avoid waterproof mascara, as the oils and the scrubbing to remove it undo the curl.
  • Do not rub or tug at your eyes, and put the lash curler away for good, you will not need it.
  • Keep oils away from the lash line: swap to an oil-free cleanser and keep rich eye creams below the lashes.

Is a lash lift worth it, and what are the options?

For most people who want a natural, low-effort result, a lash lift is genuinely worth it: weeks of lifted, darker lashes, no daily curling, and it still looks like your own eyes. The honest trade-off is that it is subtler and more temporary than extensions, and it needs the aftercare above to last.

It helps to see the three most common lash treatments side by side, because they do different jobs.

The short version: choose a lash lift and tint if you want your own lashes lifted and darkened with almost no upkeep, and choose lash extensions if you want real added length and volume and do not mind the infills. If you are not sure which suits you, tell us what you want from your lashes when you book and we will point you the right way. If a lift is not quite enough on its own, our full brows and lashes menu has the alternatives. And if it is your brows you want defined rather than your lashes, our guides to what HD brows are and how long brow lamination lasts explain how those treatments shape, lift and tint them.

One option we would gently steer you away from is a DIY at-home lash lift kit. They are cheaper, but a lash lift uses the same family of chemicals as a hair perm to reshape the lash, right on the lash line, and dermatologists are clear that a patch test beforehand is best practice (Cleveland Clinic). Getting that solution in your eye, or over-processing your lashes, is not worth the saving. We would always rather it was done by a trained therapist, with a patch test, than picked up from a chemist. Lash growth serums are a different thing again, and not something we sell or advise on, as some have their own eye-health cautions.

A quick word on safety and patch tests

A lash lift is a chemical treatment right next to the eye, so a patch test matters. We ask for one at least 24 to 48 hours before your first lift or tint. It is the recognised way to tell a genuine allergy apart from ordinary irritation before anything goes near your eyes (NHS, University Hospitals Sussex). Reactions are more often to the tint than the lift, because the dyes used to colour hair and lashes are one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis on the eyelids (DermNet), and dermatology journals have documented severe eyelid reactions to eyelash tint (peer-reviewed case reports). That is the whole point of testing first. Sensitivities can also build up over time, so even seasoned lash-lift regulars are sometimes tested again, which is completely normal rather than a red flag.

Lash lifts at NU Beauty

Our lash lift and tint is currently £42 and is available at both our Haverhill salon and NU Studio in Kedington. Your first appointment includes a free patch test, and we will talk you through the curl and darkness that will suit your eyes rather than one fixed look. Lash extensions, if you want more length and volume, are available at our Haverhill salon. If a summer holiday is on the horizon, a lift pairs perfectly with a spray tan for a wash-and-go, wake-up-ready look, with strong, low-maintenance nails to match, our guides to what BIAB is and how long it lasts and how long gel nails last, a fresh colour, so it is worth weighing up balayage versus highlights while you are planning, and if you want extra length too, our honest guide to how long hair extensions last explains what to expect. And for a smooth, glowy base under your holiday makeup, our guides to what dermaplaning is and what a HydraFacial is explain the facials that resurface, deep clean and leave skin glowing. If you would rather properly switch off before you travel, our guide to what an Indian head massage is covers the treatment that eases neck and shoulder tension.

The bottom line

A lash lift lasts around six to eight weeks, not because it wears off but because it grows out gently with your natural lashes, and a tint softens a little sooner at four to six. Keep oil away, be kind to your eyes in the first couple of days, and rebook when the curl relaxes rather than early. If low-effort, naturally lifted lashes sound like your kind of thing, we would love to look after yours at NU Beauty.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a lash lift last?

A lash lift usually lasts around four to six weeks, and up to about eight if your lashes grow slowly and you look after them well. It fades gradually rather than dropping all at once, because the curl grows out as your natural lashes shed and are replaced. If you add a tint, the colour tends to soften on a similar timescale.

Can you wear mascara with a lash lift?

Yes, but wait at least 24 to 48 hours so the curl has fully set, and then use a water-based, oil-free mascara. Avoid waterproof mascara, because the oils in it and the rubbing needed to remove it can loosen the lift. Most people find they barely need mascara at all once the lift and tint are in.

Is a lash lift worth it?

If you want your own lashes to look lifted and darker with almost no daily effort, a lash lift is usually well worth it. You get weeks of open-looking eyes, no glue or infills, and it still looks like you. It is less dramatic than a full set of extensions, so it suits anyone after a natural, low-maintenance result.

What should you not do after a lash lift?

For the first 24 to 48 hours, keep your lashes dry and makeup-free and avoid steam, saunas and swimming, so the curl can set. After that, be gentle: do not rub your eyes, skip oil-based cleansers and eye creams near the lash line, and put the lash curler away, as you will not need it.

How long until your lashes go back to normal after a lash lift?

A lash lift does not damage or permanently change your lashes. The lifted lashes simply grow out and shed over your natural cycle, usually six to eight weeks, and are replaced by new, straight ones. There is no awkward kink to grow out, so your lashes return to their natural state on their own.

Do I need a patch test before a lash lift?

Yes. We ask for a patch test at least 24 to 48 hours before your first lash lift or tint, because the lifting lotion and tint contain chemicals that a small number of people react to. It is quick and free, and because a sensitivity can develop over time, we may repeat it if it has been a while since your last visit.

Can you do a lash lift at home?

At-home lash lift kits exist, but we would not recommend them. A lash lift uses the same kind of chemicals as a hair perm, applied right on the lash line, so getting it wrong risks a chemical reaction in the eye or over-processed, damaged lashes. Dermatologists recommend a patch test beforehand as best practice, which a DIY kit skips. It is a treatment much better left to a trained therapist.
