Tanning guide

How long does a spray tan last, and how to make it last longer?

The short answer

A professional spray tan typically lasts five to ten days, fading gradually as your skin sheds. How long yours lasts depends on your skin, your prep and your aftercare, and good care can stretch it toward the longer end.

A spray tan is the quickest way to a healthy glow without the sun, whether it is for a wedding, a holiday or just to feel a bit more put together. The most common question we hear is a simple one: how long will it actually last? Here is an honest answer, plus everything that makes the difference between a tan that fades in a few days and one that stays looking lovely for well over a week.

How long does a spray tan really last?

A professional spray tan usually lasts five to ten days. Most people get a good, even colour for around five to seven days, and with careful aftercare you can stretch it closer to ten. Rather than washing off all at once, it fades gradually as the outer layer of your skin naturally renews itself, which is why it starts to look a little lighter after the first few days.

That range holds across the industry. Cleveland Clinic puts it at “about five to 10 days”, tanning brand Sienna X at “usually 5 to 7 days”, and some longer-wear formulas are quoted up to around two weeks. The single biggest factor in where you land is not the tan itself, but how your skin is prepped and looked after. The colour comes from DHA, a sugar that reacts with the very top layer of skin cells, so as those cells naturally shed, your tan goes with them.

What affects how long your tan lasts?

Two tans, two people, very different results. These are the things that decide how long yours holds:

What affects itWhy it matters
Your skin’s drynessTan clings to hydrated skin and flakes off dry patches faster
Exfoliation beforeSmooth, even skin gives an even fade; missed dry areas go patchy
How you showerLong, hot, soapy showers strip colour quickly
Swimming and saunasChlorine, salt water and heat all speed up fading
FrictionTight clothing, gym kit and scrubbing rub colour away
MoisturisingWell-hydrated skin holds a tan noticeably longer

The pattern is clear: hydration and gentle care make a tan last, while dryness, heat and friction take it away.

How to make your spray tan last longer

A little effort before and after your appointment is what separates a five-day tan from a ten-day one.

Before your appointment:

  • Exfoliate all over 24 hours before, paying attention to knees, elbows, ankles and hands.
  • Shave or wax at least 24 to 48 hours beforehand so pores have closed. If you are also booking a wax, our guide to Brazilian and Hollywood waxing explains the timing. Worth knowing that a tan will not hide dark dots on your legs, so if that is the worry, read what actually causes strawberry legs first.
  • Moisturise dry areas the day before, but arrive with clean, product-free skin on the day, as lotions, oils and deodorant can stop the tan developing evenly.

After your appointment:

  • Wait as long as your therapist advises before your first shower, then rinse in lukewarm water with no soap or scrubbing until the water runs clear.
  • Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing.
  • Keep long hot baths, saunas, swimming and the gym to a minimum for the first day or two, and moisturise every day with an oil-free lotion, which Sienna X notes makes a real difference to how long the colour holds.

When to book before an event or holiday

Timing makes a real difference to how a tan looks on the day. Book too early and it will have started to fade; book on the day itself and it can look a touch too fresh.

Say you are a bride with a Saturday wedding. The sweet spot is a Wednesday or Thursday tan: exfoliate on the Tuesday, come in two or three days before, and by the morning the colour has settled into a natural, even finish rather than looking freshly done in the photos. Before a holiday, have your tan a day or two before you fly, then keep it topped up with a gradual tanner while you are away, since sea water, pools and sun cream will all wear it down faster than usual. If you are getting event-ready, a lash lift is a lovely low-effort pairing: it lifts and darkens your own lashes for weeks, so you can go lighter on eye make-up in the heat. Strong, tidy nails finish the look too, and our guide to what BIAB is and how long it lasts covers the lowest-maintenance option.

For a wedding or big event, book your spray tan two to three days before, not the morning of.

Is a spray tan right for you?

For most people a spray tan is a lovely, low-commitment way to feel a bit more glowing, but it is worth being honest about a few things.

First, and most importantly, a spray tan gives you no sun protection whatsoever. It only colours the surface of your skin, so as Cleveland Clinic puts it, “no matter how dark your spray tan, it doesn’t provide protection from sunburn. It is not a base tan.” You still need a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher outdoors, exactly as you would with pale skin. If you are pregnant, or your skin is very sensitive or reactive, it is worth checking with us first, as the same source suggests avoiding spray tanning in pregnancy and notes that fragranced products can irritate sensitive skin. We are always happy to do a small patch test if you have not been sprayed before.

It is also worth knowing your options. A spray tan is temporary colour with no UV. A sunbed at our Haverhill salon is a different route, but it is UV tanning, so it carries real risks a spray tan does not, and it is worth reading how often you can sensibly use a sunbed before you start. A good gradual tanner at home tops things up between visits too. There is no single right answer, only the one that suits your skin and your plans, and we will happily talk it through.

Does a spray tan go patchy or come off in water?

A good spray tan should fade smoothly and evenly. When people do get patchiness, it is almost always down to prep: skin that was not exfoliated evenly, or very dry areas like elbows and knees grabbing more colour. Prepping well and moisturising daily is the fix.

Water will not remove a developed tan, but it does speed up fading. Chlorinated pools and long, hot soaks are the biggest culprits, so a quick rinse after swimming and a good moisturise afterwards will help your glow last the distance.

The bottom line

A professional spray tan lasts around five to ten days, and how long yours lasts is mostly in your hands: exfoliate and prep well, take that first shower slowly, moisturise daily and go easy on hot baths and chlorine. Time it two to three days before your event, remember it is colour and not sun protection, and you will have a natural, even glow exactly when you want it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a spray tan last from a salon?

A professional salon spray tan usually lasts five to ten days. Most people see a good colour for around five to seven days, and careful aftercare can take it closer to ten. It fades gradually rather than all at once, as the top layer of skin naturally sheds.

How can I make my spray tan last longer?

Exfoliate and shave or wax a day or two before, and moisturise dry areas so the colour goes on evenly. After your tan, wait as long as your therapist advises before the first shower, then keep skin well moisturised with an oil-free lotion and avoid long hot baths, saunas, swimming and heavy scrubbing. The more hydrated your skin, the slower a tan fades.

How long before an event or holiday should I get a spray tan?

For most events, book two to three days beforehand. That gives the colour time to settle so it looks natural rather than too fresh on the day. Before a holiday, have it done a day or two before you travel, then top up your glow with gradual tanner while you are away.

When can I shower after a spray tan?

Follow the time your therapist gives you, as it depends on the solution used. The colour keeps developing for hours after the spray, so the longer you leave it, the deeper it goes. When you do shower, use lukewarm water, no soap or scrubbing, and simply rinse until the water runs clear, then pat dry.

Does a spray tan protect me from the sun?

No. A spray tan colours only the surface of your skin and gives no protection from the sun at all, so it is not a base tan. You still need a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher outdoors and on holiday, exactly as you would with no tan.

Do spray tans go patchy?

A spray tan fades patchily mainly when the skin was not exfoliated evenly beforehand, or when some areas are much drier than others. Prepping well, moisturising daily and avoiding chlorine and long soaks all help it fade smoothly and evenly rather than in blotches.
