What are HD brows? A complete guide to the treatment

If your brows have never quite recovered from a decade of over-plucking, or you just want them to look groomed without reaching for a pencil every morning, HD brows are probably a treatment you have seen on a salon menu and wondered about. Here is a plain-English guide to what they actually are, how the treatment works step by step, how long they last, and how they compare to lamination and microblading, so you can decide whether they are right for you.

What are HD brows?

HD brows, short for High Definition brows, are a bespoke brow treatment that shapes and colours your own natural brows to suit your face. Rather than a single quick step, it combines a custom-blended tint with waxing, threading, tweezing and trimming, all mapped to a shape your stylist designs with you first. It is a trademarked treatment, created by High Definition Brows Ltd back in 2008, and only specially trained stylists are certified to carry out the real thing (Booksy).

That is the key thing to understand: HD brows are a method, not just a colour. A standard brow tint changes the shade of your brows, and a wax tidies the edges. HD brows do both of those and add the bit that makes the difference, which is the design.

How the seven-step treatment works

HD brows are built around seven steps, though your stylist may blend a few of them together as they work. Walking through them is the easiest way to see why it takes closer to 45 minutes than the five minutes of a quick tint (HD Brows).

That custom colour is worth dwelling on, because it is where a lot of the “high definition” look comes from. A good tint picks up the fine, fluffy hairs around your brow that you did not even realise were there, which instantly makes the brow read as fuller and more defined without a single hair being added.

How long do HD brows last?

Most people get around four to six weeks out of their HD brows before they are ready for the next visit (Anagen Therapies; Cambridge Brow Sanctuary). That number is really about regrowth, because it is roughly how long it takes your own brow hair to grow back to the point where the shape needs tidying again.

The tint is a slightly different story. Colour on the skin tends to soften first, usually within about two to three weeks, while it holds a little longer on the hairs themselves. So do not be surprised if the shade looks gentler after a fortnight even though the shape still looks good. How long any of it lasts comes down to your own hair growth rate, your skincare and how well you stick to the aftercare, which is why we always say results vary from person to person.

The three treatments people most often weigh up are HD brows, brow lamination and microblading, and they are genuinely different things rather than versions of the same idea. Here is how they stack up.

Brow lamination is the one people most often confuse with HD brows. It is a chemical treatment that softens and resets the bonds in your brow hairs so they can be brushed upwards and held in a fuller, more uniform shape, which is why it is sometimes called a perm for your brows (Jiemao). It is brilliant for taming unruly brows or making gappy ones look thicker, and it lasts around four to six weeks, up to eight with good aftercare, as our guide to how long brow lamination lasts explains. Microblading is the outlier. It is a semi-permanent tattoo, where pigment is worked into the skin with a fine blade to mimic individual brow hairs, and it lasts one to three years (HD Brows). We do not offer microblading, and we will happily tell you if we think it is the better fit for you, which brings us neatly to who HD brows actually suit.

Who HD brows suit, and when we would say wait

Here is how it tends to play out in the chair. Say you come in having plucked your brows to within an inch of their life in your twenties and they never really grew back (and if you are wondering how long eyebrows actually take to grow back, the honest answer is months, not weeks). On your first visit we would not just tint and wax what is left. We would map the fuller shape we are aiming for, then start you on a regrowth plan: the tweezers get banned, we shape only around the brows you are growing towards, and we tint and add a touch of makeup so you can see where it is all heading (HD Brows). Come back every four to six weeks and, appointment by appointment, your own brows fill back into the shape. It is patient work, but it is real hair, not a drawn-on line.

That regrowth approach suits sparse and over-plucked brows, and the treatment works just as well for thick, bushy or unruly brows that need taming and defining. The mapping is designed around your face, so it flatters most face shapes rather than forcing everyone into the same template.

Looking after your HD brows

The first day or two is when a little care makes the colour and shape last. The rules are simple (Anagen Therapies):

• Keep them dry for 24 hours, and go easy on makeup over the brow area for the same window.
• Skip the heat for 48 hours: no saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds or swimming, and stay out of strong direct sun.
• Do not rub or pick at the area while it settles.
• Leave exfoliating acids, scrubs, retinol and fake tan off the brow area for about three days either side of your appointment, as they all speed up how quickly the tint fades.
• A brow conditioning or growth serum used daily helps keep the hair in good condition between visits.
